1.Helen Keller,the well-known writer and educator,died yesterday at the age of 88.
◆the well-known writer and educator在句中作主語(yǔ)Helen Keller的同位語(yǔ),起解釋說(shuō)明的作用。這里的writer和educator指的是同一個(gè)人,所以只用了一個(gè)冠詞。
◆at the age of意為“在……歲時(shí)”,of后接基數(shù)詞,有時(shí)也可省略為“at+基數(shù)詞”或“at age+基數(shù)詞”。at(the age of)/at age…可位于句首或句末,在功能上相當(dāng)于when引導(dǎo)的時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)從句。
2.When she was nineteen months old,Helen fell ill.
fall ill意為“生病”,fall用作系動(dòng)詞,意為“進(jìn)入(某種狀態(tài))”,其后常接形容詞作表語(yǔ)。
【注意】fall ill是短暫性動(dòng)作,不能和表示一段時(shí)間的狀語(yǔ)連用,若與表示一段時(shí)間的狀語(yǔ)連用,應(yīng)改為表示持續(xù)狀態(tài)的be ill或be sick。
3.After she lost her ability to see and hear,she became difficult and wild.
ability在本句中為不可數(shù)名詞,意為“能力”。have the ability to do sth.意為“有做某事的能力”;lose the ability to do sth.意為“失去做某事的能力”。
【拓展】ability表示“才能,才干”時(shí),多用復(fù)數(shù)形式。 4.In 1887,a young teacher named Anne Sullivan,began to help Helen.
a young teacher named Anne Sullivan意為“一位叫安妮·沙利文的年輕教師”。named在此為動(dòng)詞name(命名,取名)的過(guò)去分詞,過(guò)去分詞短語(yǔ)named Anne Sullivan作后置定語(yǔ),修飾名詞teacher。
