一、基本特征感悟
【感悟用法】
①—Something flying far away must be a hawk.——飛得很遠的東西一定是鷹。
—No，it can’t be a hawk.——不，不可能是鷹。
②A wise man might make a mistake sometimes.聰明人有時會犯錯誤。
③Mary couldn’t have received my letter，otherwise she would have replied before now.瑪麗不可能收到我的信，否則她早就回信了。
④May you continue in your efforts and achieve new and greater successes.

⑤An Englishman who could not speak Italian was once traveling in Italy.

二、主要用法精講
1.can/could的用法
(1)can/could“可能”，表示猜測，一般用于疑問句和否定句。
—Can the news be true？——這個消息可能是真的嗎？
—It can’t be true.——它不可能是真的。
Someone is knocking at the door.Who could it be?
有人在敲門，他可能是誰呢？
(2)can可以表示理論上的可能性，指常有的行為或情形，意為“有時會……”。
Anybody can make mistakes.任何人有時都會犯錯誤。
(3)表示請求、允許(表請求時，口語中常用could代替can使語氣更委婉，回答時用can)。
Can I go now？現(xiàn)在我可以走了嗎？
—Could I come to see you tomorrow？——明天我可以來看你嗎？
—Yes，you can.(否定答語可用No，I’m afraid not.)——是的，可以。
(4)表示驚異、懷疑、不相信的態(tài)度(主要用于否定句、疑問句或感嘆句中)。
How can that be true？I can’t believe my eyes and ears.
怎么能是真的呢？我真不敢相信我的眼睛和耳朵。
How could you be so careless？你怎么會這么粗心？
(5)could have done表示“本來有可能做某事而事實上未做到”。
I could have come on time，but my car broke down on the way.
我本來可以按時到達，但是我的車在路上拋錨了。
2.may和might的用法
(1)表示允許、請求，might比may的語氣更委婉一些。
—May I watch TV now？——我現(xiàn)在可以看電視嗎？
—Yes，you may.(Yes，please.)——是的，可以。
—No，you mustn’t.(No，you’d better not.)——不，你不能看。
(2)表示可能性時，might比may的可能性小，may表示的可能性比can小(主要用于陳述句、肯定或否定句，疑問句用can代替)。
The story may not be true.這個故事可能不真。
(3)may/might have done表示“過去可能發(fā)生過某事”或“本來應該/可以做某事(實際上沒做)”。
You might have given him more help，but you were so busy.
你本來可以給他更多的幫助，但是，你太忙了。
(4)may/might as well最好還是……，不妨
You might as well do it now.你最好還是現(xiàn)在做吧。
(5)may/might well很可能
He may well be late for class.他很可能上課遲到。
3.must的用法
①表示“必須，應該，一定要”。強調主觀看法，只有現(xiàn)在時形式，否定式是must not(mustn’t)。must開頭的問句，其否定回答要用needn’t或don’t have to來表達。
We must do it now.我們現(xiàn)在必須做這件事。
—Must I hand in the paper today？——我必須今天交論文嗎？
—Yes，you need/must.——是的，你必須(交)。
—No，you needn’t/don’t have to.——不，你不必(交)。
②表示必然的結果。
All men must die.人皆有一死。
③還可表示主語固執(zhí)、偏要做他人不希望做的事。
Why must you always interrupt me？你為什么偏要打斷我？
